July – MLA Richard Gotfried’s Report

29

Summer is upon us and for many of us summer is sacred. It is a time to enjoy all that the outdoors has to offer and to appreciate time and fun activities with family and friends. We are blessed with a province that has much to offer for summer recreation opportunities. As you start your summer planning, perhaps that road less travelled might be an exciting opportunity. One such road is the Cowboy Trail, which runs from Mayerthorpe (West of Edmonton) right down west of Calgary all the way to Cardston near the US border. The scenic 735 km route has many attractions along the way. Great local eateries and history markers are just a few of the highlights of the journey. If you are looking for unique adventures, please let my office help you rediscover all Alberta has to offer.

Nobody does volunteering and Western Hospitality better than Calgary. Calgary is known for its open and welcoming environment and can do attitude. Much of this positive attitude is front and centre for 10 days of the Calgary Stampede, when our city is on display for visitors from around the world. I would encourage each of you to make all of our visitors feel at home. Let them know that Calgary is a more than a destination.

Did you know that Fish Creek Park is the largest urban park in North America? The “skills park” on the east side by the end of Bow Bottom Trail is a welcome addition for all mountain bikers, young and old, looking for a place to practice their mountain biking skills. This year Park’s Day and CreekFest will celebrate Canada’s 150th and Friends of Fish Creek Park’s 25th anniversaries highlighting nature and the importance our watershed has on the environment. It is a great, all day family activity on July 15th from 11-4 at Bow Valley Ranch.

Community events will abound this summer and so if you are having a function please keep our office informed. I will be once again visiting with constituents and businesses in the area as I continue in my tradition of “walkabout” in the constituency, so if you see me out and about please stop to say hello.

New this year, will be the office hosting a Fish Creek photo contest. I know that social media has transformed photo sharing, so share your best or most fun photo of what summer in Alberta means to you. The contest will run from July 1-August 15th. Prizes will be awarded in various categories.

This year marks Canada’s 150 Birthday. We have much to be thankful for in our great city, province, and country. Let us all join in celebration July 1st to give gratitude for the country we call home. Happy Birthday Canada!

Lastly, please join me at my 2nd Annual Stampede BBQ July 8th 11-2 at my office 1215 Lake Sylvan Drive. We will have games, face painting, live music, and food for all!
